an excerpt from Space to Breathe Again
I love to find ordinary ways in everyday life where I can gain an edge. One of those that I have enjoyed for a long time now is having a hidden sanctuary. Rarely a day goes by that I am not in my hidden sanctuary. I pray in my hidden sanctuary. I worship. I think and reflect. God meets me in my hidden sanctuary. My hidden sanctuary is my car.
For most people a car is the opposite of a sanctuary. A car is where road rage happens, blood pressure rises, stress increases. But it doesn’t have to be that way. A paradigm shift is possible. Much of the time in my car is by myself. I control what speed I drive. I control what, if anything, I listen to. My time in my car is a built-in pause between activities.
I am not legalistic about my hidden sanctuary. Sometimes I make phone calls or listen to the radio. But most of the time I drive in silence. Occasionally I play worship music. On busy days, my car provides the necessary respite in between chaotic craziness.
I am not trying to be super-spiritual here. This is intensely practical. I need my hidden sanctuary to survive, even to prosper. Think about all the time that you spend in your hidden sanctuary. Think of all the opportunity available to you. Even for parents with little children, the car can be transformed with a little thought. Maybe not every trip, but some trips.
The average commute time in the US is twenty-six minutes, one way. Almost an hour coming and going. Add other miscellaneous trips to this, and we see how great an opportunity awaits us in our hidden sanctuary.
This will take a total mind shift for many people. Instead of being a hated place of stress, we are creating a welcomed place of rest. The crazy thing is that it is all in the mind. When I first thought about this, it was like a major aha moment. I paused and realized I didn’t have to rush. I didn’t have to turn on the radio. I didn’t have to tense up because of other drivers. I had a choice. Now, not always, driving is fine, even enjoyable.
Life is hectic. Why not take the challenge of turning your car into your hidden sanctuary.
