To one person, the days fly by like a sped-up video—one day blurring into another, indistinguishable and seemingly irrelevant.
To another, the days crawl by in slow motion, lacking significance or joy, seeming as if life is being wasted.
Much of the problem comes from expecting too much from a single day.
It’s been said that we overestimate what we can accomplish in a day and underestimate what we can accomplish in a year. Well-lived days—even the ones we hardly remember—compound into beautiful and fruitful lives.
So how should we live our days, whether they feel like a runaway train or an unbearable slow bake?
My encouragement is simple: reset our expectations.
Some days will feel special. Others will seem invisible. Yet both can be invaluable if we set our eyes in the right direction.
What’s in a day? How can we reframe the way we think about the short hours that make up our lives?
A few simple practices make all the difference over time.
1. Be Thankful
“Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail.
They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.”
— Lamentations 3:22–23
Every day begins with a clean slate. God’s mercy meets us each morning.
One habit that can transform our days is beginning with a few quiet moments acknowledging His mercies and our fresh start. Gratitude at the beginning of the day sets the tone for everything that follows.
Whether through a brief prayer or a few lines in a journal, start with a simple word to God:
Thank you.
2. Listen
God speaks to us every day.
Every single day.
The problem is isn’t His silence: it is our noise. Our lives are crowded with distractions, busyness, and constant input.
One of the great joys of an ordinary day is cultivating an expectant ear.
When we listen for God and watch for His hand, ordinary days become small adventures of grace and guidance. These moments accumulate and slowly reshape the way we see life.
3. Learn
As an avid golfer, I try to approach every round with a simple goal: learn something. This mindset has transformed even terrible rounds. Instead of walking away with nothing but frustration, I look for the small insight that the day offered.
Being a constant learner reframes the mundane. Even an imperfect day becomes valuable if it teaches us something.
4. Give
Every day presents an opportunity to give.
We can give our attention, encouragement, wisdom, service, or simply our presence. Sometimes the gift is small—listening to someone who needs an ear, offering a word of encouragement, or using our talents for good purposes.
Gary Thomas once wrote about how a simple prayer he offered to someone in need after a church service profoundly shaped this person’s life. Gary could have easily assumed the sermon was the important thing in the day. Yet God used the small, quiet act of a prayer.
We never know how God might use our little offerings.
But one thing is certain:
Giving changes us.
More Than We Realize
What’s in a day?
More than we might imagine. More than we may ever fully realize.
If we learn to begin with gratitude, listen for God, remain teachable, and give ourselves away, even the most ordinary days become part of a meaningful life.
May we have eyes to see and ears to hear.

This was so good and so true! Thank you for sharing this!♥️
